Lawyers and law firms have standing to sue those who engage in the unauthorized practice of law. See Richard F. Mallen & Associated LTd. V. Myinjuryclaim.com Corp, Ill. App. Ct. 1st Dist, Np. 1-00-2912 (April 18, 2002). The case is interesting because it involved a suit by a law firm against a now defunct web site that invited injured individuals to pay up to $500 to get information about the fairness of any settlement offer they received.

Illinois State Bar ASsociation Opionion 94-11 (November 1995) addresses confidentiality issues raised by cellular telephone use. It also discusses participation in legal advice service and treatment of referral services.

Lawyer web sites are equivalent to telephone directory yellow pages. ISBA Opinion 96-10. (May 6, 1996).  Participation in bulletin board, chat group, or similar service may implicate solicitation rules. If lawyer seeks to initiate an unrequested contact with a specific person as a result of participation in a chat room or bulletin board, then lawyer subject to solicitation rules and messages must be labeled as advertising materials.
