Texas lawyers may not pay a fee to be listed on a privately sponsored internet site which obtains information over the internet from potential clients about their legal problems and forwards the information to one or more lawyers who have paid to be listed on the internet site. Opinion 561 (August 2005).

It is proper for an Ohio lawyer to place an on-line intake form on the law firm’s Internet website that enables web site visitors to e-mail legal questions to the law firm and receive responses by e-mail from a lawyer for a fee. Opinion 99-9 (December 2, 1999). The opinion outlines ethical considerations for lawwyers to follow to insure compliance with applicable rules of professional conduct.

Arizona lawyers may not ethically participate in an Internet service that sends legal questions from individuals to attorneys based upon the subject matter of the question. The opinion also notes that lawyers can not pay a fee for such referrals or give the service a portion of the legal fees earned from the referral See Arizona Opinion 1999-06(June 1999). A for-profit law firm domain name should not use the top level domain suffix “.org” nor should it use a domain name that implies that the law firm is affiliated with a particular non-profit organization or governmental entity.
