- Brownfields The Brownfields Initiative is an EPA effort to "empower states, communities, and other stakeholders in economic development to work together in a timely manner to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably use brownfields." Brownfields are defined as "abandoned, idled, or under-used industrial and commercial facilities where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination." This website offers answers to frequently asked questions about brownfields, overviews of the 28 national and 12 regional pilot projects, information on submitting a proposal for a pilot project, and a list of brownfields contacts.
